Meet a Colleague…

From time to time my leadership development work for a client requires real visual creativity in the creation of a brand image, publication of material, and so forth. When it does, I aways bring in Heidi Wormser of MagicBox Studio because she is so adept at venturing “beyond the box.”

Do you think of your work as “venturing beyond the box?”

Sometimes, but not always. Often clients come to me knowing exactly what they want and it is a question of creating it to their specifications. Often, though, clients come to me because they are stuck and want visual ideas that they have not thought of. I guess those are requests to move beyond the box.

What is your number 1 “tip” for coming up with new ideas?

I find that when I really allow for a creative process to happen – one where I can let ideas shift from one concept to another – the most interesting ideas emerge. It’s a sort of “free associating.” One of the greatest lessons I learned in art school is never get stuck on the first idea that comes to mind. Occasionally that first concept really is the best one, and you can always circle back it. But more often, that first idea leads to another, and that one leads to another, and before I know it I have something truly original and unexpected.
